Note: I just rewrote this as part of a New Year’s resolution to get more organized, focused and accomplished in 2011! I tried to put it together as almost a grant-application to myself. Maybe it will help me accomplish more of my goals, maybe not. I figured it was worth a try.
I am Steve Bozzone, and I live in beautiful Portland, Oregon. I consider New York and Philadelphia my second homes. I am a freelance media maker, transportation activist, and media junkie. I cook a lot, grow vegetables, and raise chickens. When I am fortunate to breakaway from the computer, I ride my bicycle all over the city, and sometimes to other cities.
Here’s what’s important to me:
- Equity in all things: jobs, income, education, health, media, and the environment.
- Spaces that incubate creativity and innovation, that suggest new answers to timeless problems. Collaboration is essential.
- Independence and transparency, whenever possible.
- Love, kindness, and forgiveness. Generally, this is the anecdote to our personal and collective ills.
Here’s my strategic plan for 2011.
- Claim a stake in my city, participate in the process, and when the process fails, explore other options.
- as a core member of Active Right of Way, a consortium of Portland-based active transportation activists
- by documenting the boundary-breaking potential of our roadways with Intersection 911
- most recently, by joining the board of the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition
- Operate my own business, so that I can
- be my own boss and create my own opportunities, achieve economic sustainability
- do what I already know best: make web sites, record bands, shoot videos.
- enable others to amplify their voice and steer their own campaigns
- afford a serious commitment to “do good” in my daily schedule.
- Live in an affordable big city, and fight to improve the economic human rights of its residents. I can do this by
- Working part-time in homeless services at two very cool, very different agencies dealing with some unique challenges.
- Engaging in important conversations about race, class and gender with my friends and family. Change begins in each of us.
- Provide organizations and businesses aligned with my goals financial and labor support
- Transportationists: Bike Portland, Community Cycling Center, Willamette Pedestrian Coalition, Portland Afoot, OPAL Bus Riders Unite
- Economic & Media Justice organizers: Prometheus Radio Project, Media Mobilizing Project, Street Roots
Much of my focus is local, but I firmly believe what we’re doing here in Portland is important for the entire country. Ask me about this! I always think I can do more and try harder, so this is merely a present-day analysis of my approach to a wholesome life. I respect different opinions and approaches; learning is a process that has no end.
I enjoy creating and recording music, mostly through Chief City Recordings. I have created music as part of Shout Magic, Grubstake, Cocoon and a variety of other bands. Lately, I’ve taken a step back from performing and favor recording work.
Previously, I worked within communities in North Philly & Camden, training youth and adults in media-making and trying to learn as much as I can. I especially enjoy music production and media literacy, but most of all I enjoy helping others be heard. I created media with Indymedia, young journalists, and passionate community organizers.
